NAGWS Pathfinder Award – State and National Award

MAHPERD/MOAHPERD awarded the Missouri NAGWS Pathfinder Award 1991-2014 and NAGWS  Pathfinder Award was awarded at the national level from 1991-2014.

NAGWS and AAHPERD established the NAGWS Pathfinder Awards in 1991 to honor an individual from each state who meets the criteria of the Pathfinder: "One who advocates, recruits, and enhances opportunities for girls and women in sport and sport leadership" An individual who received the state Pathfinder Award, was then recognized nationally as a Pathfinder by NAGWS. and AAHPERD.

“When AAHPERD experienced structural and leadership changes in 2010, the leaders of NAGWS sought an outside entity to preserve the NAGWS legacy.  In 2010, the Program for the Advancement for Girls and Women in Sport and Physical Activity (PAGWSPA) was established at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro in the Center for Women’s Health and Wellness (CWHW). CWHW purchased Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal for a dollar and continues to publish WSPAJ in partnership with Human Kinetics.”(Source: https://hhs-sites.uncg.edu/cwhw/resources/wspaj/)

National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS)

NAGWS actually began in 1899 with a committee to study and develop the rules of basketball for women.  In the early years, NAGWS concentrated on the development of appropriate rules and guidelines for girls and women’s sports.  NAGWS was formerly one of the six (five) national associations of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD),  now known as the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America). SHAPE America officially changed from AAHPERD to SHAPE America in December 2013.

MAHPERD/MOAHPERD Jump Rope for Heart  (JRFH) and Hoops for Heart (HFH)

MAHPERD / MOAHPERD, a state affiliate of SHAPE America,  participated in Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart educational fundraising events. MOAHPERD recognized top schools in three categories during the fall convention.  The top schools in each award were provided by the American Heart Association.  The top schools recognized ranged from the Top 10 to Top 15 to simply Top Schools.  The Missouri awards were:  (1)Dr. John Gorman Jump Rope for Heart Awards, (2) Mr. John Glidden Hoops for Heart Awards and (3) Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart Combined Event Awards.  MAHPERD/MOAHPERD members, Paula Sheldon and Kristi Bieri, were two of our long serving Missouri state coordinators for JRFH and HFH events.  Often referred to as Joint Projects, the Joint Project partnership between SHAPE America, its 51 state affiliate organizations, and the American Heart Association concluded July 1, 2018.   The last MOAHPERD recognition awards for JRFH and HFH were given during the 2018 MOAHPERD convention.

A letter to MOAHPERD membership:  Dr. Tom Loughrey, MOAHPERD Executive Director, and Kristi Bieri, MOAHPERD Program Coordinator for JRFH and HFH communicated with MOAHPERD members regarding the changes in the AHA Joint Agreement:

Subject: Re: AHA Joint Agreement

After serving so competently and faithfully as the Missouri State Coordinator for the Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart Joint Program, Kristi would like to share a personal message with all MOAHPERD members.  Should you have any questions or responses, she is willing to take your phone call or email message.  The Executive Committee is committed to having Kristi remain in a leadership position to serve as Coordinator of future programs.

This is the message from Kristi:

MOAHPERD Members,

Sadly, the negotiations with the American Heart Association were unsuccessful. As a result, neither Shape America or the AHA will be able to move forward as a team for fundraising events. However, that won’t stop us in our efforts to encourage young people to stay healthy and physically active! There will be new and exciting opportunities and partnerships on the horizon, and I will keep you informed as we at MOAHPERD move forward with Shape America.  In the meantime, if you have questions, please contact me at kbieri@odessar7.net.

Change is inevitable, growth is intentional. We will move forward.

Kristi Bieri

MOAHPERD Program Coordinator

A letter from SHAPE America to its members, chronicles the Jump Rope for Heart (JRFH) and Hoops for Heart (HFH) timeline.

[Citation: https://www.shapeamerica.org/MemberPortal/news/2018/Message.aspx]

In the late 1970s, physical education teacher and SHAPE America member Jean Barkow of Milwaukee’s Riverside High School held the first “Jump-Rope-a-Thon” to build community spirit and get students excited about physical activity, all while raising money for her local American Heart Association Chapter.

Jean’s event was a big success and other schools soon held events of their own. Shortly thereafter, the Jump Rope For Heart program was launched nationwide, co-sponsored by SHAPE America and the American Heart Association.

Now, 39 years later, Jean’s vision and passion have impacted millions of children, teachers and families who know more about heart health and the importance of physical activity because of their participation in the Jump Rope For Heart — and Hoops For Heart — programs.

In schools across the country, these programs have instilled students with a sense of pride and altruism through their fundraising efforts for heart-health research. Students have also experienced moments of pure joy by accomplishing their goals and celebrating alongside their peers and teachers.

These programs have had a significant impact on schools and communities nationwide and we are truly grateful for the tireless dedication of our members and the countless volunteers who have ensured the success of JRFH/HFH.

Over the decades, the partnership between SHAPE America and the American Heart Association has evolved, and the needs of our members have changed. After nearly 40 years, it’s now time for SHAPE America and our state affiliates to head in a new direction with Jump Rope for Heart. On July 1, 2018, the Joint Project partnership between SHAPE America, its 51 state affiliate organizations, and the American Heart Association will conclude.

Although the time has come for this partnership to end, we remain committed to providing you with the tools and resources you need to help students live their best life through effective health and physical education.

We are also excited about new opportunities and partnerships on the horizon that will give you more choices for school-wide programs that get students and families excited about health, physical education and physical activity — all while raising much-needed funds for your school and community.

As the school year comes to a close, I wish you an active and healthy summer and look forward to an exciting year ahead. If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly at smorris@shapeamerica.org.

The History of the MOAHPERD Journal (estimated 1981-2021)

The Missouri Journal of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance was the official publication of the Missouri Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and was published yearly. The Journal operated on a nonprofit basis and did not pay the contributing authors. The annual membership fee included a subscription to the Journal. The Journal was available to all members of the Association.

The Missouri Journal of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance began using volume numbers with the 1991 issue, which was designated volume 1. Earlier issues do not bear a volume number.  The front of each Journal included the following official statement, February 29, 1980 the Missouri Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance became incorporated as an association.   As the name of the organization changed, the documents added an additional official statement noting the organizational name change, April 2019 the Missouri Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance became the Missouri Society of Health and Physical Educators.

History of the Missouri Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MOAHPERD) Journal by Kathleen M. Haywood, PhD (Interview February 25, 2024):

“The first “book” like issue I have on my shelf is Spring 1981 but I believe there were some 8 ½ x 11 booklets before that.  Dr. Kathleen M. Haywood, University of Missouri at St. Louis & Dr. Lynn Imergoot, Washington University in St. Louis served as editors in 1988.  Lynn Imergoot served as editor from 1988-2009.”  Dr. Scott Strohmeyer, filled  Lynn Imergoots’ position as editor, serving with Dr. Kathleen M. Haywood until the journal ended as a print journal in 2018.”  Dr. Scott Strohmeyer, University of Central Missouri continued to serve as editor, with Taralyn Garner, State School for Severely Disabled, Volume 30 2020, as the journal moved from a printed journal to an online journal.  The MOSHAPE Executive Committee made a motion to cease publication of the MOSHAPE Journal.  Past issues will remain archived on the MOSHAPE website.  Th MOSHAPE Board of Directors passed the motion, effective  March 8, 2021.

MOSHAPE

100 years and still growing

The Missouri Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MOAHPERD) has celebrated 50 years in 1986, 60 years in 1996, and 75 years of success.  The 75th year, known as the diamond anniversary, was celebrated  in 2011 with Dr. Bill Russell’s convention theme, “Building on the Past, Shaping the Future.” Each of these celebrations was based upon A History of MOAHPERD Presidents   document identifying 1936, Helen Manley, University City Public Schools #* (Gulick Recipient), as the first president.

Following a presentation to the Central District Executive Directors in June 2024 at the Sally Scherrer Leadership Summit in Kansas City, MO, Rick Pappas (Central District and KAHPERD historian), shared the historical documentation showing  the beginning of each of the Central District State Associations.  (Note:  The power point Rick Pappas presented is located on the MOSHAPE Google site.)

Based upon the historical documentation, Henry Curtis was the first President of MOSHAPE in 1925.  He served as president for 4 years.  Therefore the 100th celebration, known as the centennial, will be in 2025.
